The HI-DC management team is dedicated to providing instruction not only in the tactical skills of their departments, but also in management and leadership. Furthermore, we are committed to supplying a level of responsibility that is unique to the field.
Your excitement, energy and commitment, along with your intelligence and creativity, are in demand. Come to HI-DC to stretch your mind and expand your skills.
Management Intern (One Expected Opening Spring 2011)
This is a rotational Internship, where Interns learn about all departments in the hostel. Unlike other Internships, you will work alongside each member of the management team as he/she faces the myriad challenges of running a lodging operation department. Our commitment to all of our Interns is that you will receive a healthy dose of management instruction, along with training in daily operations.
Below is a summary of the types of areas to which Interns will be exposed:
- Administration (with the General Manager and Assistant General Manager): Income statements; balance sheets; budgets and variances; strategy; accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Housekeeping (with the Assistant General Manager): Cleanliness standards; staffing and scheduling
- Front Desk (with the Front Office Manager): Service standards; use of the Property Management System (PMS) and Point of Sale System (POS); check-in and check-out; reservations; local area information; night audit; various aspects of hosteller assistance; staffing and scheduling
- Sales (with the Group Sales Manager): Contracts; correspondence; relationship building and maintenance; lead generation and tracking
- Programs & Activities (with the Programs Director): Hosteller activities and programs; volunteer management; community outreach
- Maintenance & Engineering (with the Maintenance Chief): Preventive maintenance; repairs; safety; emergency preparation and response
Sustainability Intern (One Expected Opening Spring 2011)
HI-DC is a strong supporter of environmentally-minded initiatives. We already do much to be stewards of the environment and contribute to the betterment of our world, but we would like to do much more. The holder of this Internship will help the HI-DC team to maximize our positive effects and minimize our negative ones.
The Intern will analyze individual and comprehensive sustainability measures:
- Develop a list of environmentally-minded alternatives
- Conduct cost/benefit analyses for these alternatives
- Estimate necessary resources (e.g., time, money, people), of sustainability measures
- Create an implementation plan
- Collect benchmark data (and where appropriate, industry comparables)
- Compile results and report findings (written and/or oral)
- Develop an approach that could be rolled out to other HI hostels (large and small)
